Abstract:

In recent years, geosynthetics have been positioned within the field of civil engineering, mainly for its versatility, accessibility and competitiveness with respect to other traditional materials such as concrete, masonry or rockfill. In addition, the problems that can be generated in terms of material disposition with respect to traditional solutions are added. In this context, geobags are born as a type of coastal protection. They are composed of geotextile, which are filled with local material, in most cases sand. With these systems are generated units of great weight and size difficult to be removed by the waves. At La Esmeralda beach, located in the district of Colan, province of Paita – Piura, geobags were used as a measure of protection because of the severe coastal erosion problems registered in the area. The proposed design, in addition to the flexibility of the geobags, allowed the readjustment due to the existing scouring processes. Likewise, the performance of this system was analyzed after three years of being implemented and the occurrence of the El Niño Costero event, at the beginning of 2017. The efficiency of the material has been evaluated in response to these external agents and the effectiveness of the solution has been verified. In conclusion, the protection system with geobags has allowed to stabilize and reduce the risk of coastal erosion in Colan. Consequently, the diffusion and implementation of this solution presents great potential in places with similar characteristics.
