Abstract:

The use of geosynthetics as reinforcement at the base of embankments or other structures can provide safety operation for highways, railways or other facilities located in areas susceptible to subsidence. Few approaches are available for the design, and few studies have compared the results. To address this need, the current work uses finite element analysis to compare the basis for design and the results of existing approaches with numerical modeling. Axisymmetric analysis is carried out varying geometric and mechanical parameters of the numerical models. The results evaluated in the comparison include stress-strain response of the reinforcements, maximum reinforcement stress and strain, and surface deflection. The results are also compared with those from previous researches. The findings contribute to the discussion on the safety of structures in areas prone to subsidence.
